Former U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown won Tuesday’s November primary in a special election for a U.S. Senate seat in Ohio, according to the Associated Press.

That sets up a general election race between Brown and Republican U.S. Sen. Jon Husted of Ohio, whom Gov. Mike DeWine appointed last year to fill the seat left vacant when J.D. Vance became vice president.

Brown defeated Columbus developer Ron Kincaid in the Democratic primary.

Husted had no main challenger in the vote and secured the Republican nomination.

Brown lost his seat in 2024 after three terms. Cleveland businessman Bernie Moreno beat him in an atmosphere where voters were outraged about inflation and the economy.

With the war and the raise in tariffs further inflation – and health care cuts creating economic uncertainty – is the U.S. Senate race in Ohio one of 11 which are being closely watched because the outcome of each could determine control of the US Senate.
