Seismic shift for Trump in 2024 race as Democrats’ rhetoric, presidential debate and legal fight backfire

by Natalia Mittelstadt

The 2024 presidential race has seen a dramatic shift as Democrats’ rhetoric, debate performances and ongoing legal battle against former President Donald Trump have backfired on them, and support for him has continued to grow, even after an assassination attempt on his life.

Democrats have branded Trump a “threat to democracy,” charged him with multiple federal and state crimes, debated President Joe Biden with CNN moderators and survived an assassination attempt — all of which have clearly hurt Democrats in the presidential race and boosted the former president’s popularity as he seeks a return to the White House.

Trump was shot in an assassination attempt Saturday during a campaign rally in Butler, Pa., where the bullet grazed his right ear. One rallygoer, firefighter Corey Comperatore, was killed in the shooting, and two others were wounded.

After the shooting, both Elon Musk and former Obama supporter Bill Ackman announced their support for Trump.

Both Biden and they were President Barack Obama condemned political violence and wished Trump all the best after the failed attack.

Host of the Daily Wire podcast Matt Walsh posted on social media platform X on Sunday: “The calls to replace Biden will end now. No Democrat will beat Trump. They would rather Biden lose to him than waste one of their rising stars on a hopeless mission. Biden’s job now is to lose, take all the blame, then go to a nursing home and disappear.”

While Democrats have tried to limit Trump’s chances of retaking the White House, they appear to only care about the former president.

Heated rhetoric

Democrats have repeatedly resorted to harsh rhetoric and insults against Trump, including in the days before the attempted assassination.

Biden told donors In an interview last Monday, he said it was “time to put Trump squarely in the middle of the shield.”

“I have one mission: to defeat Donald Trump” Biden said“I’m absolutely certain that I’m the best person to do that. So we’re done talking about the debate, it’s time to put Trump squarely in the middle of the bullseye.”

IN Interview for NBC News aired Monday, Biden was asked about his “bullseye” comment, as well as his statement that Trump is an “existential threat” during the same conversation. Biden he explained his commentsby saying that by “bull’s eye” he meant “focusing” on Trump.

“It was a mistake to use that word – I didn’t say ‘crosshairs,’ I meant ‘eye of the target.’ I meant focus on him, focus on what he’s doing, focus on his policies, focus on the number of lies he’s told in the debate.” Biden said.

“How do you talk about the threat to democracy that is real when the president says the things he says? Or just say nothing because it might incite someone?” he later added.

On Sunday, Donald Trump Jr. published screenshots two posts on the social media platform X from Biden’s account, including one from the day after the June debate that reads: “Donald Trump is a true danger to this nation. He is a danger to our freedom. He is a danger to our democracy. He is literally a danger to everything America stands for.”

The son of a former president he signed his post“Don’t tell me they didn’t know exactly what they were doing with that shit. Calling my dad a “dictator” and a “threat to democracy” wasn’t a one-time comment. It was the *MAIN MESSAGE* of the Biden-Kamala campaign and Democrats nationwide!!!”

In 2018, referring to “Access to Hollywood“Trump video, Biden said“They asked me if I wanted to have a discussion with this gentleman, and I said no. I said, ‘If we were in high school, I’d take him behind the gym and beat him up real good.'”

Senator J.D. Vance, the Ohio Republican whom Trump announced Monday as his vice presidential candidate, published on X after the attempted assassination on Saturday “Today is not just some isolated incident. A central tenet of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs. That rhetoric led directly to the attempted assassination of President Trump.”

Presidential debate

Ahead of the CNN presidential debate between Biden and Trump, the former president said accepted the debateeven though the terms were unfavorable because he believed the network would not accept his proposal.

“You know, they offered me this debate and they thought I wouldn’t do it because it’s on CNN. Is it Fake Tapper, does anyone know Fake Tapper?” Trump said at a town hall meeting in Arizona earlier this month. “And I said I’ll take it, I’ll take it — because you know what? They thought I wouldn’t take it, being on CNN and Dana Bash is very difficult for Trump.”

“So I said I’ll take it. They thought what would happen is I’d say I wouldn’t take it and they’d say, ‘Trump doesn’t want a debate.’ I want a debate.” he insisted“Honestly, we should have a lot of debates.”

CNN’s presidential debate showed Biden has come under considerable scrutiny from both sides of the aisle because of his constant mumbling, long stares and often blank facial expression, which combined to raise renewed concerns about his physical and mental fitness for office.

After the debate, CNN poll found that 67 percent of debate viewers said Trump did better than Biden, while 33 percent said Biden did better than Trump.

This a survey was also found that 59 percent of respondents had “no real confidence” in Biden’s “ability to lead the country,” while 44 percent said the same about Trump. After Biden’s performance, many Democrats called for Biden to drop out of the presidential race. As of Friday, 18 Democratic congressmen said the president should end his reelection bid. Despite calls to withdraw, Biden has repeatedly said he stay in the race.

Before the attempted attack on Saturday, Trump led Biden in the RealClearPolitics poll, the average was 2.7 points.

Lawsuits

On Monday, the federal Southern District of Florida Judge Aileen Cannon denied the motion Special Counsel Jack Smith’s case against Trump over secret documents found at Mar-a-Lago.

The judge ruled that none of the federal laws cited by the Justice Department authorized the Attorney General to appoint special counsel Jack Smith, meaning he has no authority to prosecute the case.

After Florida Secret Documents Case Dropped, FBI Whistleblower Kyle Seraphin posted on social media platform X, “It’s not over… but another of the left’s traps has closed without catching its victim. @realDonaldTrump is probably the most attacked man in history, and that’s before someone tried to assassinate him this weekend.”

Smith’s separate case against Trump in Washington, where the former president faces four charges related to his conduct on January 6, has already been indefinitely postponed pending an appeal to the Supreme Court on grounds of presidential immunity.

Fulton County District Attorney The Fani Willis Case is currently on hold.

Meanwhile, on July 2, a verdict was handed down in the “silencing” trial brought against Trump by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. delayed until September 18thoriginally scheduled for July 11, four days before the start of the Republican National Convention.

After Trump was convicted of 34 felonies in a “bribery” trial in May, his the campaign website crashedmainly due to the number of attempted donations, the campaign confirmed. Trump campaign announced the next day it was reported that $34.8 million in petite donations had been raised, but that total was later updated to $52.8 million.

Sequoia Capital Partners Shaun Maguire donated $300,000 to Trump’s presidential campaign after his conviction, but he wasn’t the only Silicon Valley tycoon to donate to the former president’s reelection effort. A week after his conviction, a charity event was held in San Francisco with more than 100 people in attendance $12 million raised for Trump. Donors have repeatedly cited the “legal fight” against Trump as a reason for their support for him.
