In an interview with ABC News on Tuesday, Cheatle explained why the building, just 500 feet from where Trump spoke, was a no-law enforcement zone on Saturday.

“This building has a peaked roof at its highest point. And, you know, there’s a safety factor there that has to be considered, that we wouldn’t want to put anyone on a peaked roof,” she said. “And, you know, the decision was made to secure the building from the inside.”

As American greatness reported yesterday, the shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was identified as a person of interest nearly a half-hour before the shooting began. But somehow agents inside the building didn’t know he was right on top of them.

“The shooter was in fact identified as a potential suspect,” Cheatle told ABC News. “Unfortunately, due to the rapid developments, when they finally found that individual, he was on the roof and could have fired shots at the former president.”

“It was unacceptable,” Cheatle told ABC. “And it shouldn’t happen again.”

She said “I am responsible for this” but continues to defy calls to step down.
