“On July 13, 2024, the United States Secret Service, under your leadership, failed to protect former President Donald Trump from an assassination attempt that resulted in the death of Corey Comperatore and serious injury to at least two other people,” the joint statement reads.
“Today, you failed to answer basic questions about this shocking operational failure and to assure the American people that the Secret Service has learned its lesson and is beginning to correct its systemic errors and omissions,” the lawmakers said.

The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, aimed the gun at the former president and Republican candidate from a rooftop just 130 yards away. Former volunteer firefighter Corey Comperatore was killed at the rally, while two other participants were injured.
Since the attempted attack, several legislators ON both sides The Democratic Party called on Cheatle to resign.
“In the midst of a presidential election, the Committee and the American people are demanding serious institutional accountability and transparency, which you have failed to provide,” the joint statement said. “We urge you to resign as Director as a first step to allow new leadership to quickly address this crisis and rebuild the trust of a truly concerned Congress and the American people.”
