Obama and his wife, former first lady Michelle Obama, vowed to do “everything in our power” to support the vice president in the upcoming election.
“The most important thing we wanted to do was just let you know and let Doug know, our future first gentleman, that we will do everything we can to help you become president and continue the incredible legacy that you and Joe Biden have been able to establish, and Michelle and I could not be more proud to support you and do everything we can to help you get through this election and into the Oval Office,” former President Obama said in a phone call. According to to the transcript obtained by Politico.
Earlier this week, Michelle and I called our friend @KamalaHarris. We told her that we thought she would be a fantastic president of the United States and that she had our full support. Obama also said Harris would be an “underdog” in the race against former President Donald Trump.
“We’re going to be outsiders, you know, and you’re going to have to continue, as you said, to earn not only the nomination but the trust of people across the country,” Obama said. “But knowing you the way we know you, we’re absolutely confident that you’re going to be able to do that. And I want to make sure that, you know, we’re sending a message not just to Democrats, but to every American — Democrat, Republican, Independent, and especially young people — that the stakes are high, and your vision of a generous, inclusive, positive, community-oriented, accountable, law-abiding America.”
The former first lady also spoke out, expressing pride in the vice president.
“I can’t make this call without telling my girlfriend Kamala. I’m proud of you. This is going to be historic. And the energy there, I mean, it’s really changed the game in a significant way, and it’s because of you,” Michelle Obama said. “The energy that you bring, your positivity, your sense of humor. Your record of inclusion, of bringing people together. I mean, that excites me and I think that excites the country. So I join my husband. We have your back. We have you and Doug. It’s going to be a fight. But you know, I, I think the country is ready for something special, and I think that something special is you.”
On Friday morning, the Obamas also posted their support on site X, formerly known as Twitter.
