As the Republican National Convention approaches, many are gearing up for a star-studded event featuring Trump… Or at least, most are.
Many GOP senators are skipping the RNC this year for a variety of reasons. According to Associated Press Press Agency, the number of senators not participating in the elections this year is “extremely high.”
It’s not uncommon for some senators running for reelection to apply this time to campaign in their home states. Sen. Marco Rubio, who is running for reelection in Florida this year, will campaign in his state rather than supporting his party in Ohio.
Other senators, like Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), were missing for other reasons. Flake told the AP he had a lot of household chores to do, like mowing the lawn.
This comes after Flake confronted the presumptive Republican nominee last week in Washington. Trump criticized Flake for “Very critical” about him at a meeting with Republican Party senators.
No one could have predicted what excuses the remaining senators would apply to withdraw from the RNC – and I have to admit, they are quite innovative!
Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) would rather watch garbage fires around his state instead of traveling to Ohio with his buddies.
Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) will be fly-fishing with his wife instead of listening to the long list of speakers at the RNC.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) will not be attending the Republican Party event because she plans to fly to her home state.
Of the 54 Republican senators, 16 will not be present and six have not yet made a decision.
