Moderate members of the Republican Party in both the Senate and House of Representatives are using the recent threat of a terrorist attack on the U.S. Capitol as an excuse to back down on President Obama’s amnesty.
Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) said National Review that he was “fully aware” of the plot to bomb the Capitol that was foiled by the FBI on Thursday. The plot included an Ohio man, described by his father as a “mama’s boy” who didn’t have a carwho was arrested Thursday by the FBI after buying two M-15 rifles. The FBI described the mama’s boy’s plans for a later attack on the Capitol as “ambitious, not operational.”
Still, moderate Republicans are panicking. “Returning to the importance of the Homeland Security Act [passed]“We take this very seriously,” said House Republican Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers. NRO“This is really the most important responsibility of the federal government to keep our country safe and we have to take that seriously… we will be working very closely with the president.”
Senate Majority Leader John Cornyn (R-TX) it echoed McMorris Rodgers, “That’s why you’re hearing an unequivocal commitment to funding the Department of Homeland Security,” NRO said. “We’re not going to put that at risk under any circumstances.”
In fact, nearly 90 percent of the Department of Homeland Security is deemed crucial and would not have been affected by the closure had Obama and Democrats decided to prioritize executive amnesty over DHS funding.
But the recent terrorist attacks in Paris and now the mama’s boy in Ohio have given moderate Republicans the perfect excuse to back down from a fight they never really wanted in the first place.
