Kasich Gets Strong Support in Wisconsin

We’re less than a week away from the Wisconsin Republican primary, and Ohio Governor John Kasich just received an endorsement from the state’s largest newspaper. Hill:

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel editorial board, which noted that it does not typically express endorsements, noted the Ohio governor’s response to last week’s terrorist attack in Brussels.

“Kasich had a smart, pragmatic answer. He is, in fact, the only thoughtful candidate with a fundamental belief in long-standing democratic principles remaining in the GOP primary,” the council wrote.

“[T]This year’s Republican presidential campaign requires a position: We are recommending John Kasich for the April 5 Wisconsin Republican primary,” the board continued.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s editorial, which can be read in full here Here:

The former congressman and businessman is offering Republicans a platform of conservative ideas centered around fiscal responsibility, while promising independents that he will surround himself with experts representing a variety of viewpoints as he makes informed, independent decisions.

What impresses us most about Kasich is his independence. Unlike Gov. Scott Walker in Wisconsin and most other Republican governors, Kasich chose to accept additional Medicaid funds that were part of the Affordable Care Act, a decision that injected $13 billion into Ohio, a compelling move for a politician focused on fiscal discipline, even in the face of Republican opposition in the Ohio legislature and criticism from conservatives across the country.

Most importantly, Kasich seems to be the only Republican in the race who could actually govern if he wins. Trump is Trump—empty, unqualified, and dangerously uneducated of foreign affairs. Cruz is brilliant, but he can’t escape the twin straitjackets of ideology and ambition. The man behind the futile 16-day government shutdown in 2013 over Obamacare also staged a 21-hour filibuster designed to do one thing: burnish Ted Cruz’s image among Tea Party conservatives. He’s not a team player.

Republicans and independents who value leadership, dignity, pragmatism, and experience should vote for John Kasich next Tuesday.

Kasich currently trails rivals Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz in The Badger State.

Yesterday, Cruz won the endorsement of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, who of course also ran for president last year.
