House Bill 2 passed Wednesday by a 75-19 margin, with some Republicans voting against the bill that would have allocated $1.65 billion in capital spending for the state and allocated another $350 million for projects across Ohio.
“This advances the health and wellness of our community centers as well as the continued expansion of higher education here in the state of Ohio,” state Rep. Al Cutrona, R-Canfield, said during Wednesday’s House session.
The bipartisan bill HB 2 was introduced by Cutrona and state Rep. Terrence Upchurch, D-Cleveland. The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.
All 14 public universities and affiliates would receive money under HB 2. The Ohio State University has the largest amount of money, $76.5 million, earmarked for 26 projects — a mix of improvements, demolitions and renovations.
The second largest amount of money goes to the University of Cincinnati with $41.1 million, followed by Kent State University with $29.1 million, and the University of Miami in third place with $23.1 million.
