Ohio school districts in financial crisis. Eileen McClory of the Dayton Daily News reports: “More fees are on the horizon as Ohio schools face a “funding crisis.”“
Ohio voters should brace for more school tax issues on local ballots as districts across the state say their budgets are harder to predict due to property tax reform, less state funding than expected and changes at the U.S. Department of Education.
“We’re hearing that districts are either taking steps to get on the ballot this year or in the next two years,” Tom Hosler, president of the Ohio School Board Association, said in a recent interview with the Dayton Daily News.
Trump vs. the Pope. Cole Behrens of the Columbus Dispatch reports: “The Bishop of Columbus speaks out about Trump’s “juvenile” attacks on Pope Leo“
The bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Columbus said he is “appalled” after what he described as President Donald Trump’s “juvenile” attacks on Pope Leo XIV.
Bishop Earl Fernandes’ remarks to The Dispatch came after Trump began a public clash with Pope Leo XIV over his criticism of the Iran war. On April 12, Trump sharply criticized the pope on social media, calling him “weak on crime” and “terrible” on foreign policy.
Vance and Moreno choose Trump over the Pope. Cleveland.comSabrina Eaton reports: “JD Vance and Bernie Moreno side with Trump in the dispute with Pope Leo XIV“
Vice President J.D. Vance and U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno, both Catholics, are siding with President Donald Trump as he escalates the dispute with Pope Leo XIV, who has spoken out against U.S. military attacks on Iran and the administration’s immigration enforcement efforts.
Moreno on Monday sharply admonished the first American pope in televised remarks shared by WEWS on social media. “I think my mother would be ashamed of the current pope,” said Moreno, a Westlake Republican. “I think it has become too political.”
Tick. Jo Ingles of the Statehouse News Bureau reports: “The number of tick-borne diseases in Ohio is increasing rapidly. Here’s why“
In 2010, 40 cases of Lyme disease were reported in Ohio. Over the next ten years, the number increased by almost 1,000% to 415. However, in recent years the number has exploded.
Last year, more than 2,800 cases of Lyme disease were reported in Ohio. This is seven times more than in 2020. The disease is caused by the bite of a deer tick. Ohio Department of Health Director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff said there are several reasons why Lyme disease cases are increasing in Ohio.
