A top Republican has ordered Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to provide key documents on undocumented migrants encountered at the southern border who may have ties to terrorism.
House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green issued call Mayorkas on Friday, demanding that he turn over all “documents and communications” dating back to Jan. 20, 2021, that could shed airy on the case. The chairman accuses Mayorkas of being sluggish to request information about the number of suspected terrorists illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, According to letter from Green.
Green says Mayorkas has failed to fully comply for more than a year with requests to provide specific documents and information about fugitives and other undocumented migrants in a terrorist-screening database he has maintained since the beginning of the Biden administration.
“The refusal of President Biden and his now impeached DHS Secretary to secure our borders or uphold our laws is placing our country in rapidly escalating danger,” Green said in a statement. public statement“The Biden administration has utterly failed to protect the American people by allowing millions of otherwise inadmissible aliens to enter the country with limited screening and vetting, including tens of thousands of special interest aliens.”
According to the letter, Green, along with Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan and Oversight Chairman James Comer, first asked Mayorkas for the information on May 19, 2023. DHS has not provided satisfactory documentation since then, despite numerous other requests throughout the year.
The subpoena comes amid an ongoing immigration crisis along the southern border. More than 7 million migrants have illegally crossed into the United States since President Joe Biden took office, According to the latest data from Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
“Amid the chaos, Secretary Mayorkas and President Biden have also allowed nearly two million people who fled an overwhelmed Border Patrol to roam freely throughout American communities, posing a nearly impossible challenge to dedicated federal law enforcement agencies who are working tirelessly to find ever-increasing needles in an ever-growing haystack,” Green said.
Since the beginning of fiscal year 2021, more than 370 foreign citizens have stayed in the country terrorist watch list which were detained while trying to illegally cross the U.S.-Mexico border, according to Green. The surge in suspected terrorists represents a more than 3,000% boost since the Trump administration.
DHS did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
