One day a friend asked me why not Democrats Have you ever become the type of backstabbing weasel that the GOP seems to unleash in factories or assembly lines somewhere in Utah or Wyoming?
I thought of this classic 1947 poem by Christina Rossetti:
Who saw the wind?
Neither you nor me:
But when the trees bow their heads,
The wind passes.
This just occurred to me other alleged Republican has jumped ship… this time in my state of Texas: Matthew Dowd – who served as a “strategist” in President George W. Bush’s successful 2004 re-election campaign – is currently seeking to become lieutenant governor of the Lone Star State (www.DowdTexas.com), defeating hugely popular incumbent Dan Patrick… . whom Dowd calls “cruel and cowardly”, accusing Patrick of “not believing in the common good”. (If by “common good” Dowd means repealing the historic Texas Heartbeat Bill, repealing our recently enacted voter integrity protections, or confiscating firearms, he is 100% right: Dan Patrick is vehemently opposed to all such stupid ideas.)
The reception at which Dowd had the opportunity to present himself as a Democrat was appropriately held at the MSNBC yakaton other “former Republican” and traitor from the same Bush-Cheney White House, the insufferable Nicolle Wallace…whose snarky side and sarcasm-laden “comments” make MSNBC late-night host Joy Reid look like Margaret Thatcher by comparison.
Dowd and Wallace – along with comedians David French, Evan McMullin and Joe Walsh, whose combined campaigns for president of the United States generated fewer votes than the number of business cards people throw into a fishbowl trying to win a free lunch at Panera Bread – join the long list of traitors GOP who will stab (a) the Republican Party in general and (b) Donald J. Trump in particular.
Space constraints prevent me from mentioning the entire Rogue Gallery, but it includes such bottom-ranking officials as Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), as well as former Maryland GOP Lt. Michael Steele – another “conservative” currently on the MSNBC payroll, accused of daily attacks on Trump, and outgoing Ohio RINO Congressman Anthony Gonzalez, who complains that the GOP has become “toxic” and who promises that “most of my energy” will be devoted to ensuring that Trump does not become president again.
But while Benedict Arnold’s party bus is packed with marginally Republican officials (Mitt Romney comes to mind, along with Ben Sasse and Lisa Murkowski) and bitter, formerly essential types like Kelly Ayotte, Bill Kristol, Charlie Sykes and – who could forget – Pete Wehner, Omarosa Manigault Newman among speechwriters… Strangely enough, there are no takers for the bus accompanying the “formers” Democrats.
In fact, few – if any – registered Democrats whenever turn against your political comrades…no matter how far to the left they lean or how many additional taxes and stupid modern government powers the Biden/Pelosi team comes up with. Last week, for example, exactly zero Democrats spoke out any concerns that their party is rapidly transforming America into the linear equivalent of a convertible with Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon flying over a cliff at the end of the movie Thelma and Louise. Spoiler alert: this was my favorite part of the movie.
I imagine that instead of tormenting themselves with the obscene debt they will owe their great-great-great-grandchildren who Never be able to pay off outstanding bills from your irresponsible and – yes –criminal waste of taxpayers money… Democrats weigh the cost-benefit analysis and conclude that personally everything will be fine.
“But Tom, what about Democratic senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema?” you ask. “Aren’t they standing in the gap to protect American taxpayers?” Google the phrase “Bread & Circuses” and you’ll see – throughout history – the predecessors of Manchins and Sinemas have always served to composed the rubies with pitchforks and torches. Eventually they will both succumb. Why? They’re not really “principled.” They’re Democrats.
A day after dodging a September recall effort, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, signed a bill into law — hang in there, Myrtle — that prohibits single-family residential development in California. The ostensible reason was to address the “housing crisis” in his state, but it’s actually the vanguard of Joe Biden’s “Build Back Better Housing” plan… coming to a neighborhood nearby (if I remember the guy with those “mean tweets” warning voters about the 2020 election .). The Democrats’ response? Crickets.
Lumber costs are 27% higher this month than in August. Prices at gas stations are enough to give drivers a stroke. Across the U.S., companies are responding to Joe Biden’s crazy vaccine mandates by firing workers who resist… including loading dock workers, school bus drivers and registered nurses. President Biden’s crazy response? We will have National Guard cover at these positions. (Earth to Joe: Has it occurred to you that taking all these Guardsmen their real job Will they reduce the productivity and profits of their employers? Democrat response to All this? Crickets.
His almost as if the Democrats knew that if they just keep their mouths shut and automatically do what Biden and Pelosi tell them to do, even if a few of them get busted on next year’s Midterms, they’ll all be in line for cushy jobs in the administration or, better yet, in the media . They can join such “journalist” stalwarts as ABC’s George Stephanopoulos and MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell… who parlayed their former job as a small-time aide in the U.S. Senate into a brilliant, if low-rated, television career.
Still, with 224 Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives (okay, 220 real ones and four of those “delegates” with medals from places like Guam and American Samoa), you’d think at least ONE OR TWO would stand on their hind legs and say, “It may cost me a future seat on Amazon’s board or get me kicked out of the Aspen Institute’s Ideas Conference, but I simply cannot vote to burden untold future generations with this wild, uncontrollable debt.”
But they won’t. Iambic pentameter may be a little off, but the same line still works:
Who has ever seen a Democrat with a spine?
Neither you nor me:
But when the trees bow their heads,
Democrats walk by.
