During a speech in Blue Ash, Ohio, on Monday to promote Republican tax cuts and jobs legislation, President Trump slammed Democrats for their silence during his State of the Union address.
Even as he shared positive, bipartisan news about the economy, Trump looked at Democrats and saw few smiles. It was “very selfish” for Democrats to want him to fail rather than for the country to succeed, the president said.
Trump was particularly confused as to why, while he boasted about African-American unemployment being reportedly at an all-time low, the Congressional Black Caucus remained stony and noiseless. Well, except for one person.
Trump didn’t know who the lawmaker was, but remembers him at least “folding his arms” when he mentioned positive jobs statistics.
“He probably got a severe reprimand” for clapping golf, Trump suggested.
It has come to the point where Trump has stopped caring about Democrats altogether.
“It was bad energy,” he recalled. Even with positive news, “they were like death and un-American.”
“Can we call it cheating?” he asked. “Why not.”
The president specifically admonished House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi for calling tax-reform bonuses “crumbs,” a comment he predicted would have as much impact as Hillary Clinton’s dismissive “regrettable” comments during the 2016 presidential election.
Pelosi, he said, is Republicans’ “secret weapon.”
He predicted that the Republican Party would do “extraordinarily well” in the 2018 midterm elections.
During his speech, Trump allowed several staffers to make their case for how they plan to utilize the money saved by tax reform.
“This will help us make ends meet,” one worker said.
