President-elect Donald Trump has chosen New York Republican Elise Stefanik to serve as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations (UN).
Stefanika is one of the first nominations announced by Trump for his recent administration since winning this year’s presidential election last Tuesday. In a statement Monday, Trump’s team told the Daily Caller News Foundation it was excited to bring Stefanik into his administration in a key role, citing her “strong” qualities.
“I am honored to nominate President Elise Stefanik to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations in my Cabinet. “Elise is an incredibly strong, tough and smart America First fighter,” Trump said of Stefanik, according to a statement provided to DCNF by spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt.
Stefanik expressed that she is ready and willing to take on this position, According to to The New York Post.
“I am truly honored to have been nominated by President Trump to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations in his cabinet,” Stefanik told The Post. “During my conversation with President Trump, I expressed how humbled I am to accept his nomination and that I look forward to gaining the support of my colleagues in the United States Senate.”
“President Trump’s historic, landslide election has given hope to the American people and is a reminder that better days are ahead – both at home and abroad,” Stefanik said.
Stefanik is set replace Linda Thomas-Greenfield, President Joe Biden’s current U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Thomas-Greenfield has served in the role since Biden’s appointment in 2021 and has decades of government experience.
Biden and Thomas-Greenfield have faced criticism for the way they have maneuvered the United Nations and its various agencies in recent years. For example, the Biden administration has strongly supported and funded the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) – which has been providing aid to Palestinians in Gaza – for years until it was discovered earlier this year that the agency employed a number of people with terrorist ties.
UN too face to face criticizes some of its own decisions, such as allowing China and Cuba – both countries with habitual reported human rights abuses – to sit on the Human Rights Council.
Stefanik’s recent role means she will leave the House of Representatives, leaving Republicans with an even smaller majority in the chamber of Congress. As of Monday, the votes were still ongoing counted as to which party will win the majority in the next session of Congress.
