Former President Donald Trump said Thursday that if he returns to the White House next year, he would force insurance companies or the U.S. government to cover the cost of in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments.
Abortion and in vitro treatment have been controversial issues for Republicans this election cycle. The recent interest in in vitro treatment stems from Alabama Supreme Court Ruling that frozen embryos obtained through in vitro fertilization turned out to be children.
Trump has not specified which form of coverage he would prefer: insurance companies or the government. However, he has said that one way he could force insurance companies to cover the cost of the pricey procedure is to make it mandatory.
“Under the Trump administration, we will pay for this treatment,” Trump said. told NBC News in Michigan“We will order the insurance company to pay.”
Only a compact percentage of insurance companies cover the cost of IVF, meaning most Americans must pay out of pocket for infertility treatments even if they can’t have children any other way.
Trump also spoke out on abortion on Thursday, stating he would vote to legalize abortion in his home state of Florida to make it legal after the sixth week of pregnancy.
Former president He also stood by withdrawal by the Supreme Court Roe v. Wade, stating earlier this month that abortion should be a state, not federal, issue.
