President-elect Donald Trump on Friday expressed his continued support for defense secretary nominee Pete Hegseth in his bid for Senate confirmation amid allegations of sexual assault, alcohol abuse and financial mismanagement.
“Pete Hegseth is doing very well,” Trump wrote on social media as his nominee, also a military veteran, meets with Republican senators on Capitol Hill to convince them he is fit and qualified to lead the U.S. military.
“He will be a fantastic, energetic Secretary of Defense who leads with charisma and skill. Pete is the WINNER and there is nothing you can do to change that!!!”
If Hegseth continues this process, he will face scrutiny during Senate Armed Services Committee hearings. Historically, if the committee gave a candidate a “favorable report,” the nomination was subjected to a full vote in the Senate, where members agreed with the committee’s recommendation and voted in favor of the nomination.
