Trump chooses former congressman Lee Zeldin of New York to head the EPA

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump said Monday that he will nominate former U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin of New York to lead the Environmental Protection Agency.

Zeldin, also a former GOP candidate for New York governor, said on social media that it would be an honor to be appointed to Trump’s cabinet. The Senate, which will be controlled by Republicans next year, will have to approve Zeldin’s nomination.

Zeldin doesn’t necessarily come from the background. He is a lawyer and currently serves as a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army Reserve. Being in Congress from 2015 to 2023He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs and the House of Representatives Committee on Financial Services.

“We will restore America’s energy dominance, revitalize our auto industry to bring back American jobs and make the U.S. a world leader in artificial intelligence” – Zeldin wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “We will do this while protecting access to clean air and water.”

In a statement, Trump said Zeldin had a “strong legal background” and “was a true fighter for America First policies.”

Zeldin is the chairman of the America First Policy Institute, a right-wing think tank that includes a host of former Trump officials.

“He will ensure fair and swift deregulatory decisions that are made to unleash the power of American businesses while maintaining the highest environmental standards, including the cleanest air and water in the world,” Trump said. “It will set new standards for environmental review and maintenance that will enable the United States to move forward in a healthy and well-ordered way.”

During Zeldin’s 2022 run for Governor of New York, a man attacked him on stage but was quickly dismissed arrested, and Zeldin was unharmed. Democratic New York Governor Kathy Hochul won the race.
