The Republican National Committee (RNC) on Friday reached a settlement with the city of Detroit that will see it hire more Republican election workers ahead of next month’s presidential election.
The settlement came after a decision by the Michigan GOP and the Wayne County Republican Committee chairmen sued Detroit in August in connection with employing more than seven times as many Democratic poll workers as Republicans in the state’s primary elections, an alleged violation of state law.
Michigan law requires that the number of poll workers from each major political party be “equal as practicable” and that each Detroit location must have at least one poll worker from both parties.
“Thanks to the efforts of the Republican Party and the Michigan Republican Party, Detroit will now change its election processes to ensure that Republican polling place workers are assigned to all polling places and as close as possible to an equal number of Republicans employed in November,” he added. RNC Chairman Michael Whatley – wrote in the statement.
“This will bring much-needed transparency and accountability to Detroit’s election system and ensure there will be a more equal number of Republicans and Democrats at the polls in Detroit. Our Election Integrity Operation will continue to fight and win in our nation’s most important elections,” he added.
Detroit initially hired 2,340 Democratic poll workers for the Aug. 6 primary and just 308 Republicans.
