Members of the House Ethics Committee will meet on Wednesday to discuss an investigation into allegations that former Florida GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with a minor, source: he told NBC News on Monday.
The committee was scheduled to discuss the report last Friday but postponed discussion after Gaetz resigned from Congress last week following his nomination as attorney general. Last Wednesday, President-elect Donald Trump nominated Gaetz for the position.
Some Republican senators who will be tasked with confirming Gaetz did just that he asked for information regarding the House investigation into the allegations. Gaetz has denied the allegations, and a separate Justice Department investigation into the allegations was concluded last year without charges.
“It certainly would be concerning because it’s part of his record,” South Dakota Sen. Mike Rounds said Wednesday. “We tend to give the president the benefit of the doubt, but we still do our due diligence and advise, and the consent is still valid.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson rejected calls to release the report, saying it would “open Pandora’s box.”
