The Republican-led House is scheduled to vote on Wednesday on legislation that would prevent foreigners from voting in local elections in Washington.
The proposed bill would “prohibit non-citizens of the United States from voting in elections in the District of Columbia.”
The DC Council previously adopted a measure allowing foreigners to vote in local elections. According to the D.C. Board of Elections, foreigners have started registering to vote.
In March, a federal judge upheld the law.
Republican lawmakers criticized the D.C. government for encouraging foreigners to register to vote by mail.
“American elections are for American citizens only,” said House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil (pictured above), R-Wis. “Every American deserves to have confidence in their elections, and that confidence is lacking when we see our nation’s capital encouraging non-citizens to vote in local elections. I am working to hold the DC Board of Elections accountable and stop non-citizens from voting.”
