Tester leads in Montana Senate race that could decide control of chamber: poll

Sen. John Tester, a Montana Democrat, currently has a slim lead in the Montana Senate race, a move that could be crucial to control of the chamber, according to a fresh poll from Napolitan News Service, Scott Rasmussen’s polling firm.

Questionnaire registered voters, released Thursday, showed Tester leading his Republican rival Tim Sheehy (pictured above, right) by a margin of 49% to 44%.

Donald Trump leads Kamala Harris 53% to 35% in presidential race [in Montana]. Sixteen percent (16%) of Trump voters currently plan to vote for Tester,” the analysis reads. “Furthermore, if Montana voters knew their vote would decide control of the U.S. Senate, 55% would vote Republican, while only 37% would vote Democrat.”

In the survey, 17% of Tester voters said they would prefer the Republican Party to control the U.S. Senate.

“During the fall of the presidential campaign season, lower-level elections typically shift somewhat toward a state’s presidential preference. In this case, that means the numbers will likely shift toward Sheehy, but by how much is unknown,” the news outlet reported.

The analysis noted that the Republican Party would gain 50 Senate seats if it won the Senate elections in West Virginia.

“If Donald Trump wins the presidency, it would give the GOP control of the Senate. But if Kamala Harris is elected president, the GOP would need one more seat to gain control. Of the few races that are considered uncertain or competitive, most are leaning Democratic at this point,” the Napolitan News Service analysis noted. “Montana is probably the best opportunity for Republicans and the biggest risk for Democrats.”
