Right to IVF Act passes Senate 51-44

by Charlotte Hazard

The U.S. Senate voted 51-44 on Tuesday to repeal the Right to IVF Act, which was previously rejected in June.

The regulations are intended to protect access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) and require insurance companies to cover the costs of infertility treatments.

A vote on the bill in June ended with it being rejected by 48 votes to 47.

For the bill to reach the Senate, 60 votes were needed.

Republicans have voted against the legislation in the past and argued that while they support access to in vitro fertilization, the legislation proposed by Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., allows abortion.

“I voted against this legislation because it goes far beyond in vitro fertilization,” Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas. said in a statement earlier this year. “It is intended to be a gateway to federalizing abortion and other issues that are best debated and considered on their own merits, rather than buried in a bill that supposedly addresses in vitro fertilization. Alarmingly, it also actively exempts conscience protections under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.”
