President-elect Donald Trump reportedly plans to issue as many as 100 executive orders on a wide range of topics on his first day in office, including his signature issue of immigration.
According to Axlesthe president-elect and his advisers detailed those plans during a Wednesday meeting with Senate Republicans. The meeting included Stephen Miller, who was tapped to be chief of staff for policy during Trump’s second presidency, as well as homeland security adviser.
One of the planned executive actions is to restore Title 42, an immigration policy that was heavily used during the Chinese coronavirus pandemic to significantly reduce both legal and illegal immigration due to health concerns. This policy sped up the process of deporting illegal aliens and also gave immigration officials broader powers to reject asylum applications.
Also on immigration, the Trump administration plans to make more effective employ of a key part of the Immigration and Nationality Act that would allow state and local governments to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in their duties to detain and deport undocumented people.
President-elect Trump also plans to take executive action to complete construction of his signature border wall, further restrict the asylum process and build more facilities to hold undocumented immigrants before deportation.
Immigration has long been a central issue of President-elect Trump’s campaign. He announced the largest mass deportation operation in American history in 2024 in response to the record influx of illegal immigrants who crossed the border during Biden’s presidency. He also suggested taking steps to eliminate birthright citizenship as well as further restrict legal immigration to prioritize the needs of American citizens.
