A story that Democrats were so quick to exploit to point fingers at Republicans forcing A 10-year-old Ohio child had to travel to get an abortion because red states banned the procedure, turned around and blamed the Republican Party for trying to “make hay.”
In an episode of PBS Newshour, anchor William Brangham believed that the shocking story could give Democrats a real chance to defeat Republicans in the November election.
(*10*) what happened, Brangham said: “Democrats seem to believe that this might be one of the things that might give them at least a glimmer of a fighting chance in the medium term. This week we saw this type of horrific case of a young 10-year-old girl who was raped. She got pregnant. She was, and then she had to leave her state and go to another state where abortion would still be allowed.”
He then accused Republicans of doubting that the story actually happened and questioned whether it would actually aid Democrats.
“And GOP officials tried to cash in on it. They doubted whether this story really existed. The local AG said we would contact the doctor who performed it. Do you think this issue and the extreme way it is being addressed will actually benefit Democrats?”
Brangham really wanted to bring this question to the audience’s attention because he repeated it one more time.
“This was an extremely extreme case in some respects it crystallized the sharpness and terribleness of this division in this country. Do you think this will benefit Democrats?” he asked Brangham.
Jonathan Capehart then took his view on the subject to an extreme, claiming that the child was being “persecuted and hunted” by the right for having an abortion, comparing it to The Handmaid’s Tale and what America was like under Trump.
“We are in favour The Handmaid’s Tale territory here. We turn onto Gilead. And if there are people who are outraged by the Supreme Court’s decision and what Republican legislators across the country in states and localities are doing about further restrictions and bans on abortion, I don’t know what else would push people to the polls that’s more than just stripping away a constitutional rights, but having the right to — the right to freedom, the right to privacy, the right to freedom not only taken away, but local officials are doing everything they can to make sure that you don’t have autonomy over your own body,” Capehart said.
