Ohio Governor Defends Haitian Illegal Immigrants

by Eric Lendrum

In a recent interview, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine (Republican of Ohio) expressed his support for importing as many illegal immigrants into his state as possible, defending the influx of 20,000 illegal immigrants from Haiti into the city of Springfield, Ohio.

ABC News reports that during an interview on “This Week” with host Martha Raddatz, DeWine said illegal immigrants are good workers and contribute to the economy, while rejecting common claims that some Haitians kill and eat pets.

“We know that the Haitians who are in Springfield are legal,” DeWine said falsely. “They came to Springfield to work. Ohio is on the move, and Springfield has really come alive because a lot of companies have come in. These Haitians have come to work for these companies.”

“Companies tell us they are very good employees,” he continued. “They are very happy to be there, and frankly, it has helped the economy. Are there any challenges associated with that? Sure. When you go from a population of 58,000 and add 15,000 people, you are going to have some challenges and some issues. And we are addressing those.”

The town of Springfield has been thrust into the national spotlight after numerous residents claimed on social media and at city council meetings that some illegal immigrants from Haiti were hunting and killing dogs and cats and eating them, just as they do in their needy homeland.

Though Democrats insisted that this is a conspiracy theory, evidence has emerged to suggest that the phenomenon is real: Police camera footage from August showed a black woman arrested in Ohio for killing and eating a cat while official police reports in Springfield confirmed conflicts involving Haitians. Over the weekend, investigative journalist Christopher Rufo published a recording of several dead cats grilled on a barbecue in Ohio.

President Trump addressed the crisis in Springfield during his debate with Vice President Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), and the most viral moment of the evening was the former president’s pointed statement that “they eat the cats, they eat the dogs.”

DeWine, however, without providing any evidence, insisted those claims were not true.

“Listen, there’s a lot of garbage on the internet and, you know, this is a piece of garbage that’s just not true,” he said. “There’s no evidence for it.”
