Obama’s high-speed rail debacle

The president’s costly “win the future” vision for high-speed rail is neither green, capable nor practical.

“Republican governors in Ohio, Wisconsin and Florida have rejected Department of Transportation money to build the lines, saying the plans would leave millions of taxpayers on the hook.

“When he took office on November 3, 2010, Ohio Governor John Kasich made it his top priority to cancel the project and return the $385 million awarded by the Department of Transportation.

“No one believed the price,” says a representative of Kasich’s office Town hall. “Respect from the Department of Transport [after looking at the average cost of a ticket and number of riders] showed that Ohio taxpayers would have to pay $17 million a year.

“In the end, the train was only going 39 miles per hour. We were given a train timetable from 1935 and this train was running at about the same speed as the one they wanted to put here. It would be a poor use of limited resources in Ohio.”
