California Gov. Gavin Newsom signaled Sunday that he will seriously consider running for president after the 2026 midterm elections.
Newsom was asked whether he would “seriously consider” a White House campaign as the nation’s attention shifts beyond next year’s contests.
“Yes, otherwise I would be lying,” he told CBS News.
His current term ends in January 2027, and California’s term limits laws prevent him from seeking another term as governor.
According to A September YouGov voteNewsom is the favorite win the Democratic nomination. She has a one-point lead over former vice president and California senator Kamala Harris. The poll shows that respondents also see these candidates as the two most “ideal” candidates (21% and 17%, respectively).
The other people in the top five in this poll are Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY-14), former Biden official Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
Harris, who recently released a recent book, said in a recent interview that she has not ruled out another presidential run.
“It’s not over yet” – Harris he said outlet. “I have been in service my entire career and it is in my bones.”
