Moreno sharply criticized his rivals for the scandal. Now it enjoys the support of a large player

During the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate, Cleveland businessman Bernie Moreno went after his opponents for their ties to major the bribery and money laundering scandal in Ohio’s history.

But now he welcomes the support of the man who brokered perhaps the key relationship in a program in which Akron-based FirstEnergy paid $61 million to buy a $1.3 billion rescue package that fell on the shoulders of ratepayers – that is, ordinary Ohio residents.

A supporter, Cleveland businessman Tony George, invited the now-convicted lawmaker to travel on a FirstEnergy private jet to Donald Trump’s inauguration in 2017 and booked the lawmaker and FirstEnergy executives into the same hotel for several days of events during which federal prosecutors say the conspiracy began . In 2020, when the FBI began making arrests, George continued to communicate with key players.

Asked for comment on the apparent hypocrisy, Moreno’s campaign did not respond directly. Instead, he attacked his Democratic opponent, incumbent Sen. Sherrod Brown.

Rescue curve

Political newcomer, Moreno in March sailed past his more seasoned opponents were buoyed by former President Donald Trump’s support.

Moreno was once a harsh critic of Trump, calling him “a.” “crazy” and “maniac”. But like Ohio senator – and vice presidential hopeful – J.D. Vance, Moreno entered politics and became a staunch supporter of Trump, who is now convicted criminals.

Moreno may have experienced a similar conversion when it comes to the 2019 corruption relief bill, House Bill 6.

IN Spectrum News 1 Debate On February 19, Moreno attacked his Republican opponents, state senator Matt Dolan and Secretary of State Frank LaRose.

Dolan voted for HB 6 in 2019, but later said he supported: full repeal.

LaRose, Ohio’s top elections official, provided “private” information to FirstEnergy CEO Chuck Jones during brutal but effective to stop the relief package from being repealed, according to Jones’ text messages presented during last year’s criminal trial. LaRose initially declined to comment on the news. Then last July he said yes I did not remember interviews with Jones and others involved in the scandal.

As a result of the bailout plot, former House Speaker Larry Householder, R-Glenford, was awarded last year 20 years in prison and former Ohio Republican Party Chairman Matt Borges sentenced to five years. Jones and former FirstEnergy vice president Michael Dowling collected by state authorities earlier this year.

About 19 1/2 minutes into February’s GOP Senate debate, LaRose attacked Moreno over what LaRose said was Moreno’s support for government subsidies for wind and solar energy. Moreno backtracked by introducing HB 6, the corrupt aid bill.

“I was opposed to HB 6,” Moreno said. “These guys weren’t. They will have to answer for their part in this scandal to a different audience than the one here tonight.”

Moreno attacked Dolan again on April 30, when took to X to say.

@dolan4ohio was a most supportive member who passed the FirstEnergy rescue bill KROOKED and CORRUPT! Matt is the Guardian of the Left Awakened Mob and the Swamp, but not the people of Ohio,” he said.

“Person B” support

That last sentence was an obvious attack on the Dolan family, who own the Cleveland baseball team. In 2021, in response to Native American protests, it changed its name from Indians to Guardians – to rage some of his fans.

However, as for Moreno’s problems with the figures involved in the bailout scandal, they seem to concern only his political opponents, not his supporters.

On May 16, his campaign took place Bourbon With Bernie collection at Mentor. The host was Cleveland businessman Tony George, which was an honor for George paid $2,500.

In addition to being a Moreno supporter, George has had a long and lucrative relationship with FirstEnergy. Entities associated with George received almost $11 million from FirstEnergy over the years, according to state audits.

Unlike FirstEnergy’s top two executives, Nominated by Governor Mike DeWine to serve on the Public Utilities CommissionHouseholder, Borges and three others, George was not charged with the conspiracy and there was no indication that state or federal authorities planned to do so.

However, George’s role was significant enough that he was dubbed “Individual B” at FirstEnergy. deferred prosecution agreement — a document in which the company admitted its guilt for the bribery scandal, along with pay out $230 million. It details Person B’s close relationship with the FirstEnergy CEO and Householder since the fall of 2016, when Householder was planning his return to the House and subsequent retaking of the speaker’s gavel.

During the trial, Householder improbably testified that he accidentally came across a FirstEnergy luxury box at Progressive Field in Cleveland during the 2016 World Series. Raising questions about whether his visit was just a coincidence, the deferred prosecution agreement includes a message from Jones, FirstEnergy’s CEO, to George on November 5, 2016 – just three days after Game 7 of the World Series.

“Give it to (the homeowner),” Jones said. “When we talked on Wednesday, I told him there would be an urgent need (for funding), but I couldn’t tell him all the details. If we do not start some additions (sic!) in the first half of 2017, it will be too late. These (nuclear) plants will be closed, sold or bankrupt. I don’t have any contact information for him.”

George replied: “He’s more than ready to create something”- federal prosecutors said in their closing arguments in the Householder trial.

Dear trash

The following January, George invited Householder and flew with him, Householder’s son and FirstEnergy Vice President Michael Dowling on a FirstEnergy jet to Trump’s inauguration. George also booked accommodations for host and then-CEO Jones at the same DC hotel.

Then there were days elegant steak dinners and other events during which prosecutors said a rescue plan was hatched.

FirstEnergy’s deferred prosecution agreement (DPA) stipulates that George continued to serve as a liaison between Householder and Jones until 2020, when Householder was arrested.

Before the feds dropped the gavel, Jones, George and Householder conspired to amend the Ohio Constitution so Householder could do so continued to serve as speaker for another 16 years. This would allow them to continue to raise electricity rates and apply the resulting obscure money to dominate Ohio government in a way that did not benefit ratepayers or the public at large.

The DPA includes messages between Jones and George from February 28, 2020. Jones called Householder a “costly friend” but said it would be valuable to keep him in a position of power because, Householder said, he could “get a lot done in 16 years.” .

George agreed, saying, “Probably more than the previous 5 speakers combined.”

George then added, “He’s going to make Ohio great again.”

Answer

This week, Moreno’s campaign declined to answer questions about these issues.

It was asked whether Moreno was aware of George’s involvement in the HB 6 scandal when Moreno accepted George’s support. They were also asked whether Moreno would refund George’s money and decline support in the future.

Communications Director Reagan McCarthy responded by emailing a question: “When will Sherrod Brown return the contributions made to his campaign over the years, including those that FirstEnergy has admitted bribing public officials?”

Brown donated $21 million he received over the years from FirstEnergy to food banks in Ohio within 10 days of Householder’s 2020 arrest, according to Brown’s records. Federal Election Commission documents provided by the Brown campaign.

“While Bernie continues to actively fundraise with key players in the FirstEnergy bribery scandal, days after the FirstEnergy scandal was exposed, the Friends of Sherrod Brown campaign made FirstEnergy donations to local food banks across the state,” a spokesperson said in an email.
