Sen. Mitch McConnell (KY) has promised to be the grim reaper for the Democrats’ legislative agenda. Like every politician in Washington, he has good days, like pushing through the core of Trump’s agenda, especially when it comes to judges, and then in a second he can destroy that good will. It was incredibly disappointing that McConnell felt insecure after the January 6 riot, even considering an offensive against Trump’s base before polls forced him to abandon this fool’s errand. He currently hopes to regain a majority in the upper house, but he is not overly confident about this outcome. As we enter the final weeks of the 2022 cycle, McConnell seems resigned to remaining Minority Leader for another session, given that Republicans have selected several candidates who clearly didn’t pan out (via Flame):
McConnell suggested Thursday that he thought the GOP would have a strenuous time flipping the Senate, citing the “quality of the candidate.”
“I think the House is probably more likely to change its composition than the Senate. “Senate races are just different, they’re statewide, and the quality of the candidates has a big impact on the outcome,” McConnell said.
While it’s not entirely clear what McConnell’s “candidate quality” remark means, it most likely refers to various GOP candidates who may have a strenuous time winning elections.
For example, many of the Republicans former President Donald Trump supported — J.D. Vance in Ohio, Blake Masters in Arizona, Herschel Walker in Georgia, Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania — are struggling in the polls. If they lose, it will be complex for Republicans to flip enough Senate seats to regain control of the Senate.
[…]
“I think it will be very tight. “We have a 50-50 nation. And I think when the smoke clears from the Senate race, we will probably still have a very, very close Senate, with a slight advantage for us or the Democrats at the top slightly,” McConnell said.
Herschel Walker could have turned things around in Georgia if he had just talked about his storied football career. With the college football season about to begin, the Heisman Trophy winner should channel his inner bulldog and stay focused until Election Day. I’m not kidding. If Walker sticks to football and goes to every game at his alma mater, he may get out of it.
However, the situation is bleak in Pennsylvania, where Dr. Mehmet Oz vacationed in Ireland and instead of committing to the campaign, he split his time between Florida. Meanwhile, Democratic candidate John Fetterman is unable to speak full sentences after suffering a stroke, so the race is turning into a circus. Fetterman has a sturdy lead that could be blown up by one disastrous debate performance.
For now, Mitch is Eeyore, but there is still time for things to change for the better in the GOP’s quest to reclaim the upper house.
One last note: Tucker Carlson burned the GOP leader for not wanting to govern. What do you say?
Tucker fumes with Mitch McConnell: “It’s entirely possible that Mitch McConnell doesn’t want to take back the Senate because then you’d have to run things. And if there’s one thing Republican Party leaders don’t like, it’s holding anything. It’s much easier to complain about Fox News.” pic.twitter.com/BBM9Xiz8Jy
