The El Paso shootings were horrific. Patrick Wood Crusius, a white supremacist maniac, shot and killed more than 20 people at a local Walmart on August 3 and wounded dozens more. He targeted Mexicans. His manifesto is full of racist overtones, yes, but he noted that his views predated Trump’s 2016 victory, that Republicans are awful and that many people must die to maintain the sustainability of the planet. There is a thread of eco-terrorism that is at the heart of his manifesto that the media ignores. Eco-terrorism is not a far-right activity, and the anti-Trump media must take potshots at the White House that denigrates it daily. Meanwhile, the self-described leftist mass shooter in Dayton, Ohio, has his political views masked by the news media because, well, it just doesn’t fit the left’s “all mass shooters can be racist right-wingers” narrative. The Dayton shooter, by the way, was a gun control advocate. Anyway, I digress.
President Trump has said the El Paso shooter should be sentenced to death. I think many would agree, given the heinous nature of the crime, but the Mexican president doesn’t want that. In fact, he has said he is exploring ways to possibly extradite Crusius to prevent his eventual execution (via AFP):
President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said Friday that Mexico does not want the El Paso shooter who killed 22 people and targeted Mexicans to be executed and will seek his extradition from the United States.
[…]
Lopez Obrador, an anti-establishment leftist, said that while Mexico condemns Crusius’s “reprehensible, abhorrent” crimes, it does not want him to be executed.
“Our constitution does not allow the death penalty. We do not want the death penalty as a matter of sentencing. Life imprisonment also does not exist (in Mexico),” he told a news conference.
“I have issued an order to investigate the possibility of seeking the extradition of this person,” he added.
“We don’t want impunity. We want the punishment to be exemplary… This should serve as an example that people need to put an end to these acts. These irrational acts of extreme hatred are not good for the United States or any country.”
Eight Mexican nationals were killed in the shooting. A federal investigation is underway into whether it was a hate crime and an act of domestic terrorism.
