Even after losing on November 5, Vice President Kamala Harris’s re-election campaign continues to hunt donors for money.
Following her Election Day defeat, the Harris campaign bombarded supporters with fundraising messages, the latest being sent on Sunday evening: According to Down emails obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation. Each email states, using slightly different language, that the “Harris Fight Fund” is soliciting donations to fund legal efforts and describes initiatives to lend a hand Democrats in tight congressional races.
“First and foremost, we want to express the fear, confusion and sadness that many of you are feeling right now,” one of Harris’ post-election emails reads. “As you read this, there are U.S. Senate and House races that are either too close to call or within the margin of a recount or some legal challenges. Could you hurry up and donate to the Harris Fight Fund today?”
After clicking link to donate contained in the emails, potential donors will be directed to the ActBlue website for the Harris Victory Fund. According to the fine print on the donation page, the first $41,300 of an individual’s donation to the Harris Victory Fund goes to the Democratic National Committee (DNC). Only another $3,100 of an individual’s donations will be deposited into the Harris for President’s Recount Account. Another $510,000 in donations from an individual donor is to be divided equally among Democratic Parties in all 50 states and D.C., with any excess funds going to the DNC.
Party committees such as the DNC may make efforts to recount votes in support of their candidates, but are under no obligation to expend funds for this purpose. According to to the Federal Election Commission.
The Harris campaign had lifted up however, almost $1 billion as of October 16 is now at least $20 million in debt, two known sources he told Politico. It is unclear whether the campaign will be able to employ funds deposited in the Harris for President’s Recount Account to pay off debts.
Harris isn’t the only losing candidate looking to rake in money from supporters.
On November 9, Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. Bob Casey sent a message to potential donors asking for cash to “ensure every last vote in this PA Senate race is counted.” According to to the e-mail received by DCNF. The Associated Press, however called the race for Republican challenger Dave McCormick a few days earlier on November 7.
After the November 5 defeat, the Harris campaign sent: e-mail to the fans the next night, asking for more money.
“The outcome of this election is not what we wanted,” the email said. “I will never give up fighting for a future in which every American can pursue their dreams. Where women in America have the freedom to make decisions about their own bodies. Fighting to protect our students and our streets from gun violence. Fighting for our democracy.”
Harris’ email ends with a plea to give Democrats money to elect candidates “who can hold the Trump administration accountable.”
Harris’ campaign did not immediately respond to DCNF’s request for comment.
