Mike Johnson appears to have failed in his bid to remain Speaker of the House as several Republicans voted for other candidates and no one secured a majority.
Johnson got 216 votes, while Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries got 215. Three other lawmakers voted for someone else and none voted for the incumbent. The vote remains open and lawmakers remain in the House.
Libertine. Ralph NormanRS.C., voted for Republican Whip Tom Emmer, while Republican Thomas Massie, R-Ky., voted for Republican Whip Tom Emmer. Rep. Keith Self, R-Pa., cast his vote for Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla.
On Friday, the House of Representatives convened for the first day of the 119th Congress.
