Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), a ranking member of the House Judiciary and Oversight and Reform Committees, made clear Wednesday that House Democrats appear uninterested in real oversight of the federal government’s response to the Wuhan coronavirus through a newly formed select committee.
Jordan said the initial steps taken by Democrats on the selection committee prove this is all about “political theater.”
“The first action taken by this committee for the purpose of restructuring was to send a letter, as a senior member [Steve] Scalise mentioned sending a letter to Universal Stainless and trying to get the mill workers in… Pennsylvania and Ohio, get the mill workers on the unemployment line. You don’t have to take my word for it: Conor Lamb and Tim Ryan – two Democrats sent a letter asking, ‘What are you doing to this company that the mill workers work for?'” Jordan said.
“The second action of this committee was this unfair hearing itself. They didn’t follow the rules, they didn’t provide proper notice, they didn’t provide a briefing note, they didn’t provide us with any witnesses, they didn’t even ask Republicans who we wanted as witnesses,” he continued.
Jordan said Democrats are trying to paint President Trump in a bad airy by taking steps to restrict travel to China and cut off U.S. funding to the World Health Organization while the U.S. is investigating U.S. ties to the Chinese Communist Party.
“So I wonder what the purpose of all this is? Because it’s an unfair hearing the way we’re doing it today – via video conference – when we should be meeting, as the senior member said, in a room with proper social distancing, asking questions, and we’re doing it this way. I think it’s all biased,” he concluded.
