A 23-year-old man living in the United States illegally has been arrested in connection with the murder of a Texas teenager.
Illegal immigrant Rafael Govea Romero was arrested Saturday in Schulenburg, Texas, and charged with the murder of 16-year-old Lizbeth Medina, according to the Edna Police Department.
In a Facebook post, the department explained that Romero was transported to the Jackson County Jail.
“Although Romero has been detained, we recognize that Lizbeth’s family and friends are grieving and will continue to need the support of the community,” the statement read. “The people of Edna can now sleep soundly.”
According to the New York Post, Medina was found dead in her home on December 5 by her mother. She was discovered after she failed to show up for the Christmas parade with her high school cheerleading squad. Medina was stabbed to death.
The mother, Jacqueline Medina, told a local news outlet that she found her daughter in the bathtub in their apartment, which is located between Houston and San Antonio. The mother reportedly stated that she believed the murder was related to a recent burglary at their apartment.
“There were no drugs, there was no such thing. “My daughter was found in a way that no mother should ever find her child,” Medina reported.
“Someone hurt my child, someone took it away from me.”

Late last week Fox News reported that House Republicans have called for a up-to-date report on the number of illegal immigrants committing crimes. In recent months, authorities have arrested illegal immigrants from several different countries in connection with violent crimes.
In August, an undocumented immigrant in Ohio was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide in connection with a fatal bus crash that killed a child and injured dozens of others. Shortly thereafter, an illegal immigrant from Virginia who overstayed his visa was charged with kidnapping and rape. A former Brazilian military police officer has been arrested in New Hampshire and convicted of 11 murders.
Last month, a man convicted of murder in Venezuela was reportedly discovered living in state-funded housing in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, after he illegally crossed the US border. Additionally, an illegal Honduran immigrant charged with rape by force, threat or intimidation; forcible abduction; and assault on a family member in Herndon, Virginia, was arrested for the third time.
