Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina said Tuesday that she is working on additional legislation in addition to a resolution banning biological men from using women’s restrooms at the Capitol.
Mace introduced a resolution regarding restrooms in the Capitol sophisticated in response to the election of Sarah McBride to the congressional headquarters in Delaware. Mace told reporters that while her restroom proposal could be adopted in the House legislation package, she plans additional resolutions.
“Today and last night I was attacked for standing up for women and girls,” Mace told reporters. “It’s ridiculous. If so, being a feminist makes me an extremist. I’m totally here for it.”
A reporter asked Mace if the resolution was a response to McBride, a transgender woman, becoming a member of Congress.
“Yes, and absolutely, and then some. I’m not going to advocate for a man, you know, there’s someone with a penis in the women’s locker room. It’s not right,” Mace said. “And I am a victim of violence myself. I am a rape victim. I have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) caused by the abuse I experienced at the hands of a man, and I know how vulnerable women and girls are in private spaces.”
“That’s why I’m 100% going to stand in the way of any man who wants to be in the women’s restroom, in our locker rooms, in our locker rooms,” Mace continued. “I will be there, fighting with you every step of the way.”
Mace discussed her experience as a survivor of sexual violence during a 2019 debate in the South Carolina State Legislature on the “heartbeat” bill, which limits access to abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. According to to Post and Courier. She told reporters that including her resolution on Capitol Hill restrooms in the House Rules package would be fine, but she intends to introduce future legislation.
“I’m working on legislation that would ban this on federal property. I am working on legislation if you are a federally funded school this should not continue and if as a member of congress across the country I am being fought against by mainstream media like you imagine what an underage girl goes through at her school ” Mace said. “You know, it’s a shame to see a biological male in a women’s space, in a girls’ bathroom or in a girl’s locker room, it’s crazy.”
“If McBride wants to go to the gym, he can go to Planet Fitness, where biological males can stay in a private room with underage girls,” Mace added. “No thanks, that won’t happen, not on my watch. And I’m going to stand in the way of anyone crazy enough to let men into women’s spaces. This is not a thing. There will be no talk of it up here. I will fight like hell on behalf of all women and girls. Thank you.”
