Ohio Republican Jim Jordan likely faces an uphill battle to become House speaker on Tuesday because there is still opposition from enough Republicans to kill his chances.
On Monday, he secured key support from several Republicans who had previously opposed him: GOP Reps. Mike Rogers of Alabama, Ann Wagner of Missouri, Ken Calvert of California and Vern Buchanan of Florida, according to The Hill. Still, at least six Republicans plan to vote against Jordan, and he can only afford to lose four GOP votes to secure 217 votes.
According to one report, Jordan could reach that threshold if donors force the hand of those who oppose him.
Republican Party donors tell Interviewees that they will stop donating to anyone who does not support Jordan in the vote.
“Our nation needs a warrior who will defend the interests of American citizens, whether Democrat, Republican or Independent. Jim Jordan is a proven commodity we can trust” – Michaelon Wright Olson who served sits on the board of directors of the Independent Women’s Forum (IWF) and is a substantial donor to the GOP, she told an interviewer on Monday evening.
“Donors are extremely frustrated and will withhold funding for NRCC if Jim Jordan is not elected speaker. Donors are extremely frustrated with congressional leadership for reckless spending, lack of full transparency in all activities, and inability to prioritize on fundamental issues, including securing our country.” – Maria Zack, founder of the foundation Nations in action– he told the Interlocutor. Despite the opposition, Jordan was bullish on Monday.
“Listen, I felt good going into the conference. I feel even better now. We still have a few people we want to talk to and listen to. And then we’ll vote tomorrow,” Jordan said as he left the GOP conference on Monday night.
