GOP governors criticize McConnell over attack-party ad

GOP Gov. Mike DeWine (OH) and Larry Hogan (MD) came to the defense of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) after his Democratic rival used them as leverage in a up-to-date TV ad. Amy McGrath, who is set to challenge Leader McConnell in November, used images of Gov. DeWine and Hogan in an attack on Leader McConnell.

McGrath claims political identification has “nothing to do with it” while launching a brazen, partisan attack on Chairman McConnell and using his GOP counterparts as pawns.

Governor DeWine overthrown Immediately after the ad was released, McGrath delivered a partisan speech in which he demanded that she not engage in attacks on Chairman McConnell.

“Ohioans are focused solely on getting through COVID-19 and getting our people back to work, and I am proud to work with partners at the local and federal levels to make that happen. For that reason, I am especially disappointed with Amy McGrath’s attack ad that uses my image against my friend, Mitch McConnell,” Gov. DeWine said in a statement. “Mitch and I have a long history of working together, and I know he, like me, is focused on this crisis, and I appreciate his leadership. I ask the McGrath campaign to immediately remove my image from her ad.”

Governor Hogan echoed the complaint of his colleague from Ohio:

McGrath will not withdraw the ad, which uses COVID-19 as a leverage tool and tries to portray Republicans as divided.

Leader McConnell’s re-election campaign debunked McGrat’s party virtue signaling theory:

“In the same 60 seconds, Amy McGrath claims the response to the coronavirus pandemic is not about politics while she exploits Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine’s image for her own political gain,” a McConnell campaign spokesman said. he told The Hill. “The ultra-liberal McGrath has made it clear she is only interested in brazenly cozying up to popular leaders like Gov. DeWine in order to score cheap political points.”

McGrat’s attempt against Speaker McConnell is unlikely; once again, the Kentucky Democrat’s failed attempt to attack Speaker McConnell backfired.
