GOP demands FBI to explain Trump investigation despite lack of evidence of attack on Trump

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan is demanding the Justice Department turn over key information regarding its investigation into former President Trump, warning against possible bias in a politically motivated investigation.

In letter addressed to Attorney General Merrick Garland, Jordan said special counsel John Durham’s report on FBI “lapses” alerted the Republican to red flags.

Following ‘scandalous’ investigation, GOP questions Garland on whether there is any real basis for attacking Trump, complaining of “institutional rot permeating the FBI.”

“The extent of the FBI’s bias and reckless disregard for the truth detailed by Special Prosecutor Durham is downright outrageous. The FBI sought to dismiss the report’s findings, saying it had “already implemented dozens of corrective actions” “to prevent similar inappropriate behavior in the future,” Jordan wrote in the letter.

The Ohio Republican added that the Durham report makes it clearer that accountability and reform is needed at the FBI, pointing to Wake’s “documented political bias” toward conservatives.

The letter demands that Garland explain the agency’s actions by June 15.

Jordan is skeptical about possible FBI interference in the upcoming presidential election after the Durham report found the agency tried to undermine voters in 2016.

Durham’s 305-page report, completed after four years, revealed that neither U.S. law enforcement nor the Intelligence Community had any evidence of collusion to link Trump or members of his campaign as Russian agents.

Jordan invited Durham to speak with the committee later this month, while also asking the Justice Department for a briefing with Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco about Durham’s report.

FBI Director Christopher Wray was threatened with contempt charges Wednesday by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Rep. James Comer (R-KY) after the agency chief refused to turn over a non-classified document containing evidence of an illegal scheme involving President Joe Biden and a foreign national.

But on Friday, the FBI relented and turned over the document to Biden, which is now headed to Capitol Hill for review.
