Every now and then, in what seems like a never-ending attack on our core values and the rule of law, good news comes to lithe.
The good news is now a unanimous decision by a three-judge panel of the Ohio Court of Appeals, affirming the jury’s decision in favor of Gibson’s Bakery in the case against Oberlin College.
Gibson’s Bakery sued Oberlin College for defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress and willful interference with business relations because of the school’s involvement in and support of student demonstrations accusing the bakery of racial profiling and discrimination.
The decision is worth our attention because it shows how disturbing the situation is in our colleges and universities.
As our nation tilts further and further to the left, as our most basic values - now called conservative values - are pushed out the door and replaced by the chaos of moral relativism, some brave people – in this case, the owners of Gibson’s Bakery in Oberlin, Ohio, have not they allow themselves to be intimidated and do not back down.
And that refusal paid off for the Gibson family and for all Americans who care about the truth.
Oberlin College must now pay Gibson’s Bakery $33 million in punitive damages and $11 million in compensatory damages.
Long story brief, a black student from Oberlin was chased by the store owner’s son after he saw him shoplifting a bottle of wine.
The student and two of his friends who were then involved were arrested by the police and all later pleaded guilty.
However, the incident sparked student demonstrations outside the Mom and Pop bakery, started by David Gibson’s great-grandfather in 1885.
The owners were branded as racists and leaflets were handed out stating that there was “racial profiling and discrimination” in the store.
Hopefully, the lawsuit filed and won by the Gibson family will put an end to the liberal apply of these terrible accusations.
The picture of academic and social reality we currently have at Oberlin College, with its reputation as one of the nation’s premier liberal arts colleges, is deeply troubling.
Oberlin is now on the hook for multimillion-dollar damages because its school administrators are so caught up in their liberal dogma that they can no longer think clearly, honestly, and objectively.
The university maintains a website dedicated to the case and now, even after such a devastating defeat in court, it continues to deny what happened.
What is particularly troubling is that the school administration is unwilling to accept that this case was not about the First Amendment, but rather about the school’s support of its own students in defaming the Gibson family.
Over the years, I have spoken at nearly 300 colleges and universities and have seen and experienced campuses taken over by dogmatists and left-wing activists.
A 2020 study released by the National Association of Scientists surveyed 12,372 college and university faculty members about the political affiliations.
In the entire sample, there were 8.4 Democrats for every registered Republican. At Oberlin College, the ratio was 10.8 to 1.
Considering that the American population as a whole has a roughly 1-to-1 ratio of people identifying as Democrats to Republicans, we get a picture of the incredibly distorted reality that has taken over higher education.
In the last presidential election, former President Donald Trump won the votes of people without a college degree (50% to 48%). However, it lost the vote of college graduates 43% to 55%.
The nation is grateful to the Gibson family for refusing to be intimidated by the leftist dogmatists at Oberlin and standing firm for the truth.
Yet despite this essential victory, we still have a stern problem with juvenile Americans earning college degrees and learning how not to think.
