This past Saturday, a mentally unstable shooter walked into a Wal-Mart in El Paso, Texas, and brutally murdered 22 innocent people. The shooter, whose name cannot be revealed for the sake of decency, was a crazed white nationalist. Both mainstream media and Democratic politicians, never one to miss an opportunity to denigrate Donald Trump, even (or especially) in times of national mourning, were quick to link President Trump to the shooter.
Unlike previous false narratives about the president, this one is particularly disgusting. Unlike the false narrative of collusion with Russia, which became almost comical in the face of its eventual evaporation with the Mueller report, this false narrative of Trump’s mythical racism is disturbing in the euphoria with which Democrats are pursuing it. But it underscores exactly how desperate and hypocritical the left has become. If Democrats want to link President Trump to a crackpot who held at most a peripheral view of illegal immigration, as he did, then shouldn’t we link every Democratic politician and media elite to every unhinged criminal who holds the same views as they do?
Less than a day after the events in El Paso, a mentally unstable man entered a nightclub in Dayton, Ohio, and murdered nine innocent people. This time, the crazed killer espoused a socialist ideology, admired Elizabeth Warren, and sympathized with the domestic terrorist network Antifa. Is Elizabeth Warren to blame for the incident? Are Antifa apologists in the Democratic ranks and media as guilty as the shooter?
June 16tAlexandria Cortez compared legal and protected ICE detention centers to Nazi concentration camps. Shortly afterward, an Antifa terrorist set fire to an ICE facility, citing AOC in his manifesto. Is Congresswoman Cortez responsible for this cowardly act? Will she change her position on disbanding ICE? Of course, she should change her position based on the facts and realities of our immigration crisis, but should the actions of this rogue bomber really be a catalyst for catharsis for her?
On June 14, 2017, a left-wing activist and staunch supporter of democratic socialist Bernie Sanders opened fire on a group of Republican lawmakers practicing for a softball game. Where was the media condemnation of Sanders? Where was the outrage over democratic socialism?
Since the horrific attacks in El Paso, and really since he came onto the political scene, Democrats and the media have tried to paint Donald Trump as a racist. They have demonized him with the most venomous insults. MSNBC anchor Nicole Wallace he statedon the air, President Trump “talks about exterminating Latinos.” A statement so absurd, even by MSNBC standards, that the host had to retract it. Joe Biden, ignoring his own past, claimed, without any substantive support, that President Trump has, “fanned the flames of white supremacy in this countryEven Cory Booker, soon to be an “also-ran,” went so far as to to talk“I want to say with greater moral clarity that Donald Trump is responsible for this.” By that standard, can we honestly blame Booker alone for every criminal act in his native Newark, N.J.?
It is both wrong and illogical to blame politicians who hold similar views for the actions of the mentally ill. This standard is well-held when it comes to liberal politicians. But not when it comes to Donald Trump. When it comes to Donald Trump, all standards of journalistic decency and integrity go out the window because it fits the left’s false narrative of President Trump as a manic, fear-mongering racist.
There is a crisis of illegal immigration in this country. Both sides have acknowledged this, albeit reluctantly for some. Just because the El Paso shooter committed a racist, vicious, and completely inhumane attack does not mean that the president in any way agrees with his actions or ideology. If he did, all of the aforementioned Democrats could be held accountable for the actions of their supporters or anyone who engages in violence to promote similar, albeit distorted, beliefs.
The Democratic media and politicians apply this double standard for two uncomplicated reasons. It furthers their perpetual false narrative of Donald Trump as a racist white supremacist while promoting their own political agendas. If you are going to blame President Trump for the actions of the El Paso shooter and somehow internalize their views, you have to apply the same standard to every case. Would the left be okay with that?
