Comment: End the carbon tax in the courtroom of eco-activists

by Larry Behrens

US helps reduce world’s first global carbon tax,” To read heading. And every American who values common sense should celebrate.

President Trump’s administration he was vehemently opposed the United Nations’ attempt to impose a global carbon tax through the International Maritime Organization’s ridiculous “net zero framework.” The message couldn’t be clearer: American energy policy is made in Washington, not dictated by unelected global bureaucrats.

But while the global carbon tax has been stopped abroad, the same idea is being smuggled in here at home – through the courts. Environmental activists and their lawyers are trying to do in the US what the UN has failed to do: impose a carbon tax on working families.

Recently, one of the lawyers associated with the climate lawsuit was caught telling the truth behind their strategy. Here full quote in your own words:

“Tort liability is an indirect tax on carbon emissions. You sue an oil company, the oil company is liable. The oil company then transfers that liability to the people who buy its products. In some ways, this is the most competent way. The people who buy these products will now pay for the costs imposed by these products. … [This is] a somewhat convoluted way to achieve carbon tax goals.”

It’s not bullshit – it’s a confession.

The oil company then transfers this responsibility to the people who buy its products… The people who buy these products will now pay for the costs imposed by these products.

Translation: We know working families will pay the price.

Tort liability is an indirect carbon tax…… [This is] a somewhat convoluted way to achieve carbon tax goals.”

Translation: We know we can’t get through Congress, so we’re going through the back door.

Americans already know that a carbon tax means higher prices – and they have rejected it every time. According to to one surveyover half 55% say they do not want to pay even $1 more per month on their energy bills due to climate action. This disapproval skyrockets to 75% when the proposed cost reaches $75 or more per month. The bottom line is that working families will not support higher energy costs to symbolically signal climate benefits.

The Trump administration understands that carbon taxes – both global and domestic – hurt working Americans. Now the Supreme Court must decide whether to allow these climate lawsuits to proceed. Over 100 members Congress, led by House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, urged the Court to reject them, warning that activists were trying to utilize the justice system to achieve what Congress has repeatedly refused to do.

If carbon tax supporters truly believe in their cause, they should make their case before Congress. But they won’t. Even the most left-wing members know that voting for a novel carbon tax would be political suicide. Instead, they count on sympathetic courts to do their filthy work. And they hope that society will not notice it before it is too delayed.

When environmental lawyers tell you what they’re trying to do, believe them. They admitted out thunderous the still part: Their lawsuits are a carbon tax by another name. The Supreme Court must review this plan and shut it down before Americans are forced to pay the price.
