CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten said Monday that former President Donald Trump’s lead in Sun Belt states is disastrous for President Joe Biden’s re-election chances.
Trump is leader Biden by 13 percent among likely voters in Nevada, by 9 percent in Georgia and by 6 percent in Arizona, According to to the latest New York Times/Siena College questionnaire. Or on “CNN News Central” said that a Trump victory in every Sun Belt state would be uncommon for a Republican and asserted that the former president’s advantage was due to changing his coalition to include more non-white voters.
TO WATCH:
“Frankly, these Sunbelt battleground states for the Joe Biden campaign are an absolute disaster,” Enten said. “Donald Trump’s smallest lead is in Arizona, he has six leads. Look at this, nine in Georgia, 13 in Nevada. My God, gracious, my God. This is huge – no Democrat has lost this state since John Kerry lost it in 2004.”
“What about those battlefield states on the Great Lake? This is something Joe Biden’s campaign can work on. Look, Pennsylvania, Donald Trump is up three, but that’s within the margin of error. Wisconsin Donald Trump leads by one. Within the margin of error, actually Joe Biden is leading, well within the margin of error, by one point here. This is what Joe Biden’s campaign can work on. The Donald Trump campaign absolutely loves it and it looks like it’s like a lot of other polls in the Sun Belt battlegrounds,” Enten added.
Trump narrowed his lead with Biden among two key voting blocs that Democrats typically win by gigantic margins – Black Americans and Latino Americans, according to a NYT poll found. Biden leads Trump 70% to 18% among black voters and 47% to 42% among Latino voters in the six swing states polled.
“The Trump coalition is changing,” Enten said. “Basically, this is where the cooking happens. This is at least one of the main reasons. So this is the likely voter in all the states we just talked about. In 2020, Trump’s coalition consisted of whites, making up 84 percent of the Trump campaign. Look where it is now. That’s 78 percent. In 2020, the nonwhite portion of Trump’s coalition was 13 percent. Now look, that’s 19 percent. So Trump’s coalition is becoming more diverse. And of course, these Sun Belt battlefield states are more diverse than the Great Lake battlefields.
Interviewer Frank Luntz he stated in March, Arizona and Nevada will play a key role in selecting the winner of the 2024 presidential contest.
“But Arizona and Nevada have very high Latino and Latino votes,” Luntz said. “This vote typically votes Democrat by about 15 percent. “Donald Trump has leveled with them and if that happens, it will mean that Arizona will change sides and Nevada will change sides.”
