A majority of registered voters, 59 percent, support a federal ban on transgender procedures such as puberty blocking and gender reassignment surgery for minors, new nationwide ban vote found.
Registered Republicans had the most support for a federal ban (82 percent), while registered Democrats had the least support (36 percent). Independent pollsters found majority support for the ban, with 56 percent in favor.
Central Square voter poll was conducted by Noble Predictive Insights on October 2-4 among 2,560 registered voters. The margin of error for the pooled sample was ±2.1%.
The poll found that while both genders supported a federal ban on transgender procedures for minors, men were more likely to support it – 63% compared to 56% for women. Of the ethnic groups surveyed, “others” were most in favor of a ban (63 percent compared to 61 percent for whites). Of the Black voters surveyed, 46 percent supported the ban, 32 percent opposed and 22 percent were unsure.
In terms of demographics, the categories most in favor of a federal ban were 45-54 and 54-65, with 61 percent in both surveys, and 18-34 was the least likely to be in favor, though still a 52 percent majority of them. supporting a ban on procedures for minors.
Although both college-educated and non-college-educated voters favored the federal ban by more than 50 percent, non-college-educated voters favored it more by 61 percent, while 55 percent of college-educated voters supported the ban.
Voters with children supported the ban more often than voters without children – 61% to 52%, respectively.
Geographically, rural voters were more supportive of the ban than suburban and urban voters (64% vs. 57% and 58%, respectively).
Regionally, the Northeast was the least supportive of a federal ban, with 51% in favor. The South was most supportive of it (61%), while the Midwest was most supportive of it at 60%. Voters in the West favored the ban by 59 percent.
Transgender procedures for minors are currently banned in 25 states, including states like Ohio, which ranks among the nation’s highest in the number of procedures and procedures per capita, according to the nonprofit Do No Harm. According to Data Do No Harmpublished last week, at least 13,994 procedures were performed on transgender people across the United States between 2019 and 2023, The Center Square reported.
Do no harm is a non-profit organization of doctors and other health care professionals, whose name comes from the Hippocratic oath: “First, do no harm.” According to its website, Do No Harm “fights to reduce the unscientific and individually harmful practice of so-called ‘gender-affirming care'” for children.
In an email to The Center Square, David Byler of Noble Predictive Insights wrote that “on many issues regarding transgender rights and students and youth, the Republican Party has public opinion on its side. There’s a reason why when you look at GOP ads, they continually address this and other related issues. And some prominent Democrats are spreading moderate, not leftist, messages.”
He added that “Republicans know that transgender issues are a serious social issue for them – and after being hit so many times by abortion issues since Dobbs, they want to make sure they push back and find social issues that work for them.” effective.”
