It’s time to “clean house” in Congress, and Jim Jordan is the man to do it, a group of conservative leaders wrote Monday. The momentum that led to the Republican congressman from Ohio becoming the next Speaker of the House began immediately after Paul Ryan announced his retirement. Jordan, a member of the staunchly conservative House Freedom Caucus, told the media he was considering running because colleagues encouraged him to throw his name into the ring. He will likely face GOP Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Republican Steve Scalise (R-LA).
Jordan has been quite vocal against GOP leadership itself when speaking out about the budget bill recently passed by Congress. Not only did the massive legislation fund things that were promised not to be funded, but the legislators who would ultimately be responsible for it barely had time to read it.
The trial was “terrible,” Jordan told CNN.
On Monday, a group of 114 influential conservatives also pushed Jordan to make a statement for the speaker. A group made up of people representing the Patriot Tea Party, FreedomWorks, American Gun Owners, the American Family Association and more, signed a letter to Rep. Jordan calling on him to drain the swamp.
“America needs you to declare yourself immediately as a candidate for Speaker,” the leaders write. “We are writing to you on behalf of the millions of Americans who want Congress to drain the swamp.”
The signatories apply poll numbers to present their arguments. As they note, a fresh survey by John McLaughlin for the Ear to the Ground Listening Project found that 60 percent of those surveyed want to drain the swamp. Only 6 percent believe Republicans will keep their campaign promises.
Conservative leaders say Americans now more than ever need a leader who will work with Trump to enforce his policies, not obstruct them. Let’s stop the government and finally build this wall – they say (paraphrasing).
“You must take the initiative,” the conservative group emphasizes again in conclusion.
