A group of Republican attorneys general wrote a letter to Senate Republican and Democratic leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) before the confirmation hearings for President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Amy Coney Barrett.
A group of GOP Attorneys General from Louisiana, Indiana, Georgia, Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and West Virginia, urged the Senate to quickly confirm Judge Barrett to the highest court in the land:
“We, the undersigned Attorneys General of our States, write to urge the Senate to promptly hold a hearing and confirm the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court of the United States…We are aware that there are those who believe that the Senate should not hold hearings for the president’s nominee . In response, we quote excerpts from a 2016 letter sent to the Senate by the Attorneys General of California, New York and 17 other states: “The Constitution clearly sets forth the procedure for filling a vacancy on the Supreme Court. The president is obliged to submit the nomination.” lawyers write. “Some have expressed concern that senators of the 116th Congress will not have enough time to adequately consider Judge Barrett’s qualifications. History and precedent show that this is not true. Justice Ginsburg herself was confirmed 42 days after her nomination. Justice Sandra Day O’Connor took 33 days to be confirmed, while Justice John Paul Stevens was confirmed 19 days after his nomination… From Judge Barrett’s stated views on the law and her adjudicative opinions, we are confident that she understands this responsibility and will work to protect the constitutional framework that our Founding Fathers intended. Indeed, Justice Barrett’s judicial opinions demonstrate a firm commitment to interpreting the Constitution based on its original meaning.
Judge Barrett’s credentials are exemplary, despite Democrats’ insistence that she is unfit to serve on the Supreme Court.
