Well, the mainstream press is certainly excited. This mind-blowing news is still being published all over the news now that it has been announced, courtesy of Axios another conservative political action committee was formed to fight President Trump. This latest armed force is called The Right Side PAC and is touted as being formed by former GOP operatives and influential Republican figures.
Yes…almost. This latest crank team is headed by Matt Borges, a former GOP chairman from Ohio. Borges has long been at war with Trump, and his influence can be summed up by the fact that he is a longtime associate of John Kasich. Endorsing a neutered candidate and Trump’s eventual ousting of him as state chairman is not fodder for a revival.
The second face that The Right Side introduced to the media is Anthony Scaramucci. Calling him a “former Trump White House operative” is most generous, considering his tenure as WH communications director lasted all of 10 days. When your political career pales in comparison to Omarosa’s, you can probably throw out the “operator” title. Yet under these names, the press is vigorously reporting on a modern wave of opposition to Trump; a man who has opposed Trump for years, and a money guy who previously thumbed his nose at Obama and Hillary before trying to latch onto Trump’s cloak.
Every time one of these PACs comes up, the same cycle seems to occur; Sour press releases sprinkled with needy humor are sent out, the media vigorously reports how more and more conservatives are turning against the president, a modern group shows an emboldened attitude and then starts collecting money… from Democrats. All this noise and import amounts to preaching a choral style of influence.
Pay attention to what the Right Side promotes in its efforts. Get ready, it may come as a political electromagnetic pulse… those who were never Trumps support Joe Biden. For these groups, such as the highly touted but low-impact The Lincoln Project, the persistent fact remains that they can do nothing but support Democrats to signal their distaste for Trump.
You can quickly see that messaging is not this style’s sturdy suit. Borges says the Right Side PAC will emphasize that Biden is a moderate. According to Borges, Biden is moderate. You can only apply this description if you’ve missed every Democratic debate. Biden can thank Bernie Sanders for taking a more extreme approach to his position, which prevented him from seeming entirely like a communist student activist on campus.
They also intend to influence some evangelicals – assuming this is said with a straight face – by emphasizing the fact that Joe Biden is a devout Catholic. This is a man who boldly supports abortion. He is “pious”, we are sold.
For his part, Scaramucci, a similarly staunch conservative, was last seen at the event at Marta’s vineyard to celebrate Bill Clinton’s birthdaysays, “I am confident that we will be able to convince a large segment of Republican Party voters that Biden is the right person to vote for if they want to remain true to their principles and the legacy of the Republican Party.” He sounded like the man who gave money to Hillary and Obama.
All these anti-Trump PACs follow the same pattern. They apply disparaging language towards Trump and describe how poisonous he has been to Washington, the Republican Party, and even conservatives in general. Then, in the same breath, they note that the cure for this toxicity is to vote for Democrats. They will never be able to explain how voting for people who openly express contempt for conservatism will become a way to get back into a conservative place of power.
The vacancy in these groups shows up not just in their opposition to Trump or enthusiasm for Biden and the Democrats, but more so in what they don’t do. Their outrage and contrarianism would become much more influential if they ever succeeded in promoting conservative voices. Where are the conservative candidates? They never manage to come up with an alternative to this ideology, never providing names that might lead us back to their perceived notion of “true conservatism.”
Instead, they continually tell us that Joe Biden is the solution. The man who he wanted to put Christians on terrorist guards letters too he once described a tea party acting like terrorists. They say he will be the one to lead the Conservatives back to where they are. No wonder only the press and Democrats are impressed with these groups.
