The House Ethics Committee on Wednesday voted against making public a report into allegations that former Florida GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with a minor.
Chairman Michael Guest did not elaborate on the vote, but said that “the committee has not reached an agreement on the publication of the report” according to “Polityka”.
Senate Republicans and House Democrats urged the committee to publicly release the report after the election of President-elect Donald Trump daft Gaetz for his attorney general. However, a separate Justice Department investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct resulted in no charges last year.
The news comes after Illinois Democratic Rep. Sean Casten threatened to introduce a preference resolution that would force the full House to vote to release the report if the panel did not do so on its own.
“The allegations against Matt Gaetz are serious. They are reliable. The House Ethics Committee spent years conducting a thorough investigation to get to the bottom of this matter,” Casten said in a statement statement. “This information must be made available to the Senate so that it can provide constitutionally required advice and consent.”
