President-elect Donald Trump on Friday formally announced his selection of GOP Gov. Doug Burgum of North Dakota as secretary of the Interior and chairman of the modern National Energy Council.
Trump had previously teased Burgum’s nomination earlier in the week, but he didn’t make an official announcement until Friday. The North Dakota governor ran for the 2024 Republican nomination and later was a finalist for Trump’s vice presidential pick, but lost to Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio.
The modern NEC “will consist of all departments and agencies involved in the permitting, production, generation, distribution, regulation, and transportation of ALL forms of American energy.” Trump said.
He went on to point out that the council would be critical to his goal of American energy dominance and would play a key role in achieving his foreign policy goals.
