Trump picks Matt Gaetz as attorney general

by Ben Whedon

President-elect Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he has selected Republican Sen. Matt Gaetz of Florida as attorney general.

Gaetz, a conservative firebrand, led a group of dissident Republicans who ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in 2023. He is a staunch Trump supporter.

“I have the great honor of announcing that Congressman Matt Gaetz of Florida is hereby nominated to serve as Attorney General of the United States,” he added. Trump posted. “Matt is an exceptionally talented and tenacious attorney, trained at William & Mary College of Law, who has distinguished himself in Congress through his focus on achieving desperately needed reform at the Department of Justice.”

“Few issues in America are more important than ending the partisan weaponization of our criminal justice system,” Trump continued. “Matt will end armed government, protect our borders, dismantle criminal organizations and restore Americans’ badly damaged faith and trust in the Department of Justice.”

“On the House Judiciary Committee, which oversees the Department of Justice, Matt played a key role in defeating the Russia, Russia, Russia fraud and exposing alarming and systemic government corruption and weaponization,” Trump concluded.
