In times when numerous battlefield states tied in the presidential race – the group supervising the elections notes that 29 elections this year – including one for Congress – have ended in a draw.
The Public Interest Legal Foundation has updated its version Tie Election Database partly to demonstrate the potential effect of even one illegal voting.
In 2024, another 18 contests were decided by one vote. These elections are held in primary elections or, in some cases, local elections do not coincide with federal and state election days.
“If people ever think their votes don’t matter, I hope they remember this tied election,” he added. J. Christian Adams– said the president of the Public Interest Law Foundation in a public statement. “Every vote matters. Only one vote could decide who would gain power. Everyone eligible should register and vote in November.”
In total, including previous years’ elections, the database includes 635 tied elections and 173 single-vote elections.
While a tie in any statewide state is extremely unlikely, several recent battleground polls have shown a tie between the former president Donald Trump and vice president Kamala Harris.
Some Insider Advantage Survey showed that Georgia had drawn. AND CNN poll it turned out that North Carolina was tied up. Some Emerson Poll it turned out that Pennsylvania was tied. Another Emerson survey found that The ones from Nevada. Rasmussen Reports polls showed a tie between the Wisconsin candidates and Michigan.
Despite the incredible improbability of a statewide tie in any election – much less a presidential race – earlier this year there was indeed a highly unusual tie in the congressional primary in America’s most populous state.
Legal basis report update he didn’t mention the presidential race, but noted several examples of a tie or close race this year.
In the Democratic primary for the House of Representatives, the vote was 30,249 to 30,249. California 16th Congressional District, tie for second place between candidates Evan Low and Joe Simitian. Even though they finished behind Sam Liccardo, who received about 38,000 votes, it appeared that all three Democratic candidates would advance to the November general election under the state’s jungle primary system. However, after a recount, Low finished second by five votes.
The Public Interest Law Foundation further refers to this in Missourithe victory of the Cottleville Town Committee was decided by one vote. The report shows that Missouri had the most tie or single-vote elections in 2024, with a total of eight.
In Michigan, the Wise Township supervisor’s race ended in a tie and was interrupted by a lawsuit. Michigan’s election results were tied five times this year.
Texas, New York, Colorado and Oklahoma each have three ties in 2024.
In Tennessee, a tie in the Scott County school board race was broken by a provisional vote. In Oklahoma, the Republican primary for Carter County sheriff was tied and decided when one of two names was drawn from the bucket.
The report found that 28 states require tie-breaking by a game of chance, and 13 require a special runoff. In Montana, Tennessee and West Virginia, the executive selects the winner, while in Nevada and New Hampshire the decision is made by the legislature.
According to the legal basis, New Jersey is the only state that does not have a tie-breaking mechanism.
